The government is launching various strategies to shift towards water saving irrigation system i.e., drip irrigation and sprinklers to reduce water usage and to increase the agricultural productivity. Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation is encouraging farmers to adopt micro irrigation systems from surface irrigation as it offers benefits like increase productivity by 30-40%, reduce labor and energy cost, decreases fertilizers and upgrade the crop quality. For instance, government planned to invest USD 11.6 million for plantations on 3,140 hectares in Upper Egypt and to provide modern irrigation systems along with the solar systems to improve the electricity supply.

Drip irrigation offers efficient management which increases productivity in terms of land and water, reduces fertilizers and yield waste, improve crop quality and yield homogeneity. This type of modern micro irrigation systems increases land suitability by 38% and irrigation efficiency around 65 to 87% as compared to other types of irrigation systems. This is expected to propel the drip irrigation systems market.

In 2017, Egypt government took new irrigation initiative in which country aimed to adapt 5 million feddans to modern irrigation systems. The government offered farmers to pay for new irrigation systems in instalments. In addition, farm owners will also get smart cards that can be accessed for subsidized pesticides, seeds and fertilizers.
