An Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) is a microprocessor-based controller of power system equipment, such as circuit breakers, transformers and capacitor banks. IED term is used in the electric power industry to describe these devices. These devices receive data from the sensors and power equipment and issue control commands, such as tripping circuit breakers if they sense high/low voltage, current, or any frequency anomalies, and raise/lower voltage levels in order to maintain the desired level.
